The human being is divided into two halves: the material body and the soul. The duality between the body and the soul was understood and accepted as a phenomenon connatural to existence. Only death could separate body and soul; the first decomposed, the second traveling to another plane of existence or transmigrated through reincarnation. The notion of the soulless other self is actually the fear of one's own death. The contemplation of the doppelgänger is a particular case in mythologies that revolve around the fear of self-destruction or self-loss. The individual is simply looking at a duplicate of themself. A double that has the same appearance as the original, but is different in essence because it is ruled by a force that is not the true soul.
